Dachshunds come in three coat types — smooth, long-haired, and wire-haired — and each has different grooming needs. Most are low-maintenance, but long and wire coats need more attention.
Grooming by coat type
Smooth: the lowest maintenance — occasional baths, nails, and ears; minimal brushing.
Long-haired: silky feathering that tangles, especially on the ears, chest, and legs — brush regularly and tidy every 6–8 weeks.
Wire-haired: a harsh coat plus eyebrows and beard; benefits from hand-stripping or clipping every 6–10 weeks.
Typical cost
Expect $40–$75 for most grooms. Smooth Dachshunds are cheapest; long and wire coats cost a bit more due to the extra brushing, trimming, or hand-stripping.
Owner tips
Whatever the coat, keep nails short and check the ears regularly. For long-haired Dachshunds, brush the feathering a few times a week to prevent mats. Because of their long backs, a groomer experienced with careful, supportive handling is a plus.
