How Often Should You Groom Your Dog? (By Coat Type)

How often your dog needs professional grooming depends mostly on its coat type. Here's a simple guide to how frequently to book, plus what to do at home in between.

Grooming frequency by coat type

Curly / non-shedding coats (Poodles, Doodles, Bichons): every 4–6 weeks — these mat the fastest.

Long double coats (Shih Tzu, Yorkie, Maltese): every 4–6 weeks to prevent tangles.

Heavy double coats (Golden Retriever, Husky, German Shepherd): every 6–10 weeks, with extra deshedding in spring and fall.

Short smooth coats (Beagle, Boxer, Lab): every 8–12 weeks — mostly baths, nails, and ears.

Wiry coats (Terriers, Schnauzers): every 6–8 weeks, often with hand-stripping or clipping.

Signs it's time for a groom

Book sooner if you notice matting, a doggy odor that lasts after a bath, overgrown nails that click on the floor, hair covering the eyes, or dirty, waxy ears.

What to do between grooms

Regular brushing is the single most important thing you can do. It prevents mats, spreads natural oils, and cuts down on shedding. Curly and long coats need brushing several times a week; short coats need it far less. Keep nails, ears, and teeth on your radar too.
