French Bulldogs have a short, smooth coat that needs little cutting — but grooming them well is mostly about skin folds, ears and safe drying. Expect $40–$70 every 6–8 weeks, and choose a groomer who understands flat-faced breeds.
The folds are the job
The wrinkles on a Frenchie's face, and the fold above the nose in particular, trap moisture, food and skin oils. Left alone they develop yeast and bacterial infections — one of the most common health complaints in the breed.
Clean and dry the folds two or three times a week, more in hot weather:
- Wipe gently inside each fold with a damp cloth or an unscented pet wipe
- Dry thoroughly — this step matters more than the cleaning
- Check for redness, odor or discharge
Also check the tail pocket — the recess beneath a tightly screwed tail. Many owners don't know it exists until it becomes infected. It needs the same clean-and-dry routine.
Heat and drying — a genuine safety issue
French Bulldogs are brachycephalic and overheat far more easily than long-nosed breeds. Heated cage dryers have been implicated in deaths of flat-faced dogs.
Ask any new groomer directly: "Do you use heated cage dryers, and how do you handle brachycephalic breeds?" The answer you want is hand-drying or unheated air with constant supervision. A vague reply is a reason to go elsewhere.
The coat
Short, fine and smooth — no haircut required. Frenchies do shed, more than owners expect, and a weekly rubber curry brush or grooming mitt removes loose hair and spreads coat oils.
Bathe every four to eight weeks. Many Frenchies have sensitive skin and allergies, so a gentle or oatmeal shampoo is usually the safer choice, and thorough rinsing matters.

Ears
