How Much Should You Tip a Dog Groomer?

Tipping your dog groomer is customary in the U.S., much like tipping a hairstylist. Here's a simple guide to how much, and when to give a little extra.

The standard: 15–20%

A tip of 15–20% of the grooming cost is typical and appreciated. On a $75 groom, that's roughly $11–$15. Many owners round up to a comfortable number.

When to tip more

Consider tipping toward 20% or above when the groomer handled a difficult or matted coat, worked patiently with an anxious or senior dog, squeezed you in on short notice, or did especially detailed styling. Holidays are another common time to add a little extra.

Who gets the tip

If the shop owner grooms your dog personally, tips are still welcome — the "don't tip the owner" rule from other industries doesn't really apply in grooming. If a separate bather or assistant helped, you can ask the front desk to split the tip.

How to tip

Cash is always welcome and goes straight to the groomer, but most shops also let you add a tip to a card payment. If you have a regular groomer, consistent tipping helps build a great ongoing relationship — handy when you need a last-minute appointment.
