Shiba Inu Grooming & Deshedding Guide

Shiba Inus have a plush double coat and are famously clean dogs — but they shed heavily twice a year and can be particular about being handled, which makes the right groomer important.

How often

A professional bath and deshedding every 8–12 weeks, ramping up during the spring and fall coat blow. Brush at home weekly, and daily when they're blowing coat.

Typical cost

Expect $60–$95 for a bath, high-velocity blow-out, deshedding, nails, and ears. Price depends mostly on how much undercoat is coming out.

Don't shave the coat

Like other double-coated breeds, Shibas shouldn't be clipped down — the coat regulates temperature and protects the skin, and it may grow back patchy. Deshedding is the answer.

Handling matters

Shibas can be sensitive about restraint, nail trims, and being handled by strangers — some famously protest loudly. A patient groomer who goes slowly makes a big difference, and starting young helps a lot.

Owner tips

An undercoat rake is essential during coat blow. Shibas are naturally fastidious and rarely smell, so baths can be infrequent outside shedding season.
