Samoyed Grooming: Coat Care, Costs & Deshedding

Samoyeds have one of the most demanding double coats of any breed — thick, white, and prone to matting. They need serious, regular grooming to stay healthy and keep that signature fluffy look.

How often

A professional groom every 4–8 weeks, with extra deshedding sessions during the twice-yearly coat blow. At home, brush 3–4 times a week — daily during shedding season.

Typical cost

Expect $90–$150+. Samoyeds are large with an enormous volume of coat that takes a long time to wash, dry, and deshed properly — they're among the pricier breeds to groom.

Never shave a Samoyed

The white double coat insulates against heat and cold and protects pale skin from sun. Shaving can cause patchy regrowth and real sun-damage risk. Deshedding and thorough drying — never clipping — is the correct approach.

Owner tips

Use an undercoat rake and a quality slicker, working in sections right down to the skin. Mats form behind the ears, under the legs, and around the collar. Thorough drying matters enormously — a damp undercoat leads to matting and skin problems.
